Recipes To find a recipe click on the proper category on the menu to the left under the Recipes menu and then click on the recipe you want to see. To find a recipe for a specific ingredient go to the search... box near the upper right hand corner of this web page and type in your ingredient(s). You can also search for a recipe type such as “pizza”. You may want to narrow down your results to recipes only after your initial search. On the search screen type in “mfc recipe” or (for F.A.C.T. recipes only) “fact recipe” on the line with your ingredient(s), click the button below that says All words and click the Search button. Recipes are being added every month, so if you set Ordering to Newest first you will see the newest recipes at the top of the result list.

Converting Measurements: There’s a Toy for That! (Or an App.) I received a brushed-stainless recipe converter as a Christmas gift. It looks like something youcan decode secret messages with but instead divides or multiplies a single measure by two orthree. Simultaneously, it converts metric input or output to Imperial input or output. Pretty cool,and it will work during a power failure. It’s magnetic, and big enough to hold a major work of arton your fridge. Of course there are apps do what this tool does, but if you drop this one into apan of gravy the consequences are minor. The manufacturer is Amco Houseworks. Convert.exe is a free downloadable app for Windows- and Linux-based computers. One hot July day in 1988 I was arriving at Baxter State Park in Portland Maine for a barbecue. I had a picnic basket with German potato salad, chocolate chip cookies and homemade vegetarian burgers made primarily of oats, which I had wrapped individually in tin foil. I had recently become vegetarian and this was the first time I had made my own burgers, back then veggie burgers were not available in stores. My recipe was inspired from the first plant based burgers which were oatcakes that the Scottish have been baking since the 14th century. They were made with ground oats, flour and yeast with a little liquid and heated on a metal plate. I found a spot on the grill, gingerly unwrapped my creation and placed in among the meatier offerings. One of the picnickers asked me, what is that? |

February marks the first month of my transition from writing “Into the Cupboard” to writing “Omnivoria”. As mentioned in the January newsletter letter from the editor, “Omnivoria” will be printed on an every other monthly basis, alternating with “Veganesque”, and will contain a recipe featuring an item from the co-op meat department (along with other ingredients, of course).

This month the meat department is introducing a whole new line of products from the Pure Country pork farm in Ephrata, Washington. The meat department manager, Brennus Moody, will be providing all of you lovely readers with details about the farm and their pork raising practices in his article. I was able to sample one of their products in order to provide you with a recipe and a review. |

Refined Recipes
Several months ago, when it was still warm enough to sit on the back porch and write,
I published a set of guidelines for cookbook recipe submissions. Since then my role has
expanded—I’m now helping with the Week of Menus feature (which is going to be a
freestanding brochure) and will be assisting the team who’s putting the Co-op’s recipe
archives online. It was time for me to look at the bigger picture. (Or the whole enchilada.)
So, on a cold January day, I sat at the kitchen table (the indoor one) and refined the recipe
guidelines into a publishing tool called a “style sheet.” I’ll be using it to organize existing
recipes and structure new content. So, if you’re writing some of your recipes up for
submission, please try these guidelines on for size. Here are the highlights. Let me know
if you’d like a copy of the entire document. I’m hopeful that soon we can put it on the
Co-op website as a reference.
