Congratulations to the Moscow Food Co-op! The Co-op was formally recognized as the outstanding 2011 Wisecape nominee for commercial sites in the established landscape category at the December 5, 2011, City Council meeting. Transforming a portion of an asphalt parking lot into an attractive oasis of native plants is no small feat! In presenting the award to General Manager Seth Marcantonio, I used the occasion to welcome him to the community and for him to say a few words of introduction.
The City of Moscow established the Wisescape concept in 2008 to promote water-efficient landscaping, to reduce demands on the declining groundwater system. Principals include landscape design aesthetics, resource conservation, soil enhancement and plant selection. The annual award recognizes individuals and businesses that set examples for landscape aesthetics, resource efficiency and sustainability. The objective is not competition, or to reward the most lavish or expensive projects, but rather to acknowledge people's creative efforts, however modest, and provide inspiration to others in Moscow and around the region. Creativity, determination and inspiration can be found in every entry I have the privilege of reviewing each year. I commend all who practice water conservation and beautification through Wisescaping.
