June Staff Picks

The first staff-person I asked to give me a product recommendation this month was Evan Metz, who has been working at the Co-op as a barista since September. When I approached Evan at the end of a busy day, he recommended a product he was planning to enjoy immediately upon getting home from work, the Pelican Brewing Company Doryman’s Ale. Evan says that although the Co-op has a great beer selection, he has come back to this one quite a few times. He describes it as having “a lot of character without being overwhelming, and generally a pleasant beer to drink.”

Founded in 1996, the Pelican Brewery is located right on the beach in Pacific City, Oregon, and they pride themselves on their ability to pair their delicious beers with their award-winning pub food. They also go one step further and actually incorporate beer into many of the food items they serve. The Pelican Brewing Company has been recognized as “Brewpub of the Year” on a number of occasions as a result of their excellent beer, food, and ambiance.

The Doryman’s Ale was one of the first beers they served at the brewery and was an adaptation of a prize-winning homebrew that the Brewmaster converted from a five-gallon batch to his new 465-gallon brewery. It has won a number of professional awards and is a smooth, slightly nutty brown ale that would pair well with some Co-op bacon cheddar brats.

The next staff-person I spoke with this month was Steven Banning, who has been working at the Co-op as a Deli Server just shy of two years. For his recommendation, Steven chose the Ginger Soother drink made by The Ginger People. Steven says this product is great for soothing an upset stomach, and he admitted it is his go-to hangover cure. Of course the mere mention of using this product as a hangover cure elicited quite the discussion amongst anyone near enough to participate in the conversation about other possible hangover remedies.

Family-owned and operated, The Ginger People was founded in 1984 with a mission of expanding the market of ginger products. Their goal was also to educate people about using ginger medicinally to restore vital energy, stimulate circulation, and relieve countless maladies including nausea, headaches and arthritis. The company currently has factories in the United States and Australia that sell over 80 ginger ingredients and finished products, including ginger candies, baked goods, and beverages.

The Ginger Soother is a naturally refreshing beverage that can be enjoyed chilled or heated. It can be used to soothe a sore throat or upset stomach, and can ease nausea. It is high in antioxidants that help to neutralize inflammation caused by free radicals.
