Theo Chocolate holds the distinction of being the first chocolate company in the United States to be certified as both Fair Trade and organic. Another thing that sets Theo Chocolate apart is that, although many U.S. chocolatiers melt down blocks of chocolate to create their products, Theo Chocolate makes their own chocolate by roasting cocoa beans and blending them with sugar, milk, and cocoa butter.
Once their chocolate base is made, the real magic happens and they add the special ingredients to create their different varieties of chocolate bars: Orange, Raspberry, Mint, Cherry Almond, Salted Almond, and Salted Toffee. And if you’re feeling more adventurous you could try their Sea Salt, Chili, Ginger, Black Rice Quinoa Crunch, or their 85% Dark Chocolate.
In the early 1990s the founder of Theo Chocolate, Joe Whinney, was working and traveling through the tropical regions of Africa and Central America where he saw firsthand the unjust way cocoa bean farmers were being treated. He decided to make a difference, and for the next decade he worked hard to improve the working conditions and compensation to farmers. In 1994, Joe was successful in importing the first organic and Fair Trade cocoa beans to the U.S. Ten years later, Joe’s dream of making his own chocolate “from bean to bar” became a reality when he founded Theo Chocolate in Seattle.
Theo Chocolate pays farmers well above market value to buy the highest quality cocoa beans from Peru and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They only use suppliers that are committed to quality, environmental sustainability, and ethical business practices.
