August Dime in Time: Backyard Harvest

Dear friends at the Co-op,

We appreciate that you have chosen Backyard Harvest as the recipient of Dime in Time funding for August 2016. Below is our article that explains our program and how we will use the funding.

Thank you Co-op shoppers for your support through the Dime in Time program.

Backyard Harvest is a Moscow-based nonprofit organization that provides greater access to fresh fruits and vegetables for those in need on the Palouse and in the Lewis/Clark Valley. We provide this access through our three core programs:

Community Orchard- Assembles volunteers to glean residential fruit trees and local orchards to share with those in need.

Harvest Share- Collects donations from gardens and farmers. We also help community groups and in-need individuals establish gardens.

Shop the Market- Facilitates the processing of SNAP/EBT food benefits (previously known as food stamps) at five regional farmers markets. Free bonuses are distributed for the purchase of fresh produce.

The program that your Dime in Time will support is our Shop the Market program at the Moscow Farmers Market and Tuesday Growers Market. There are many partners that help make Shop the Market possible at these markets including Food For All, a program of Spokane Catholic Charities; the City of Moscow; and the Moscow Food Co-op. We are pleased to be offering “Fresh Bucks” as our bonuses for fresh produce in 2016. Fresh Bucks are $2 vouchers for the purchase of fresh produce, plant starts, and seeds from farmers market vendors. A $2 Fresh Bucks voucher is given for every $5 in SNAP/EBT food benefits processed.

Your support has three main benefits. 1) It helps low-income consumers have greater access to fresh, locally grown produce. 2) It provides our hard-working, regional, produce vendors with more customers. 3) It fosters greater access to our farmers markets which are vital parts of our local culture.

The Shop the Market program “makes me feel included in a sense of community that I couldn't otherwise afford” said one program participant.

Backyard Harvest will continue to provide and promote greater access to fresh fruit and vegetables for our neighbors in need. Thank you for your support!
