"Powell writes like a culinary Chris Rock - profane, honest, and very funny."
―Seattle Times
We have a special read for November’s Good Food Book Club. By members’ unanimous request, we’re bringing out “Julie & Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously,” a beloved memoir just past its ten-year pub date.
If you haven’t read the book or seen the movie, well, you’re in for a treat. If you have? Welcome back to a warm, savory read full of laughs and inspiration. Before her memoir launched, Julie Powell was working temp after temp job, struggling to make ends meet, and having a rough go of it. Then… she made a change. She decided to make every recipe in Julia Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking,” in her tiny New York City apartment, in one year.
What ensues is unexpected, delicious, expansive, and hilarious. And Julie’s life has never been the same.
Now is the time of year when the harvest is in, the nights grow colder, and darkness settles over the land amid twinkling lights of cook stoves, reading lamps, and, now, our little glowing devices. Take some time this month to snuggle in, breathe deep, and dip into a sweet memoir that reminds us of the glowing good of people and food. It might be ten years on, but the joy of “Julie & Julia” remains timeless.
As a special holiday indulgence, we’ll have our semi-annual “dinner & a movie” gathering. We’ll use Powell’s memoir, and if you are so inclined, Julia Child’s “Mastering,” as launch points for inspiration. Please bring anything you feel inspired to cook and share. We’ll discuss the book, share food, and watch the movie version of the book: Nora Ephron’s film “Julie & Julia” with Amy Adams and Meryl Streep. The co-op will also provide treats. This will be on the Sunday just after Thanksgiving.
Please join us to discuss “Julie & Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously” by Julie Power (Little, Brown and Company (2009) on Sunday December 1 at 4:00pm for dinner, our book talk, and a movie. We will have a potluck inspired this month’s memoir. Remember to email bookclub@moscowfood.coop for reminders about the Good Food Book Club. “Julie & Julia” is available through your local library. If you are interested in buying the book, check out the area’s local used book stores or visit BookPeople of Moscow where Book Club members receive a discount.
