CHANGE FOR GOOD

A community giving program of the Moscow Food Co-op

Change for Good is a community giving program of the Moscow Food Co-op focuses on eliminating single-use items from the waste stream.

For each reusable tote bag, reusable coffee mug or thermos, bulk container, produce bag, or EcoToGo box, they bring in, customers are able to donate a “5-cent token,” up to 10 tokens, to one of three organizations selected by the Change for Good committee. These recipients will rotate every three months, with one consistently being the Co-op’s FLOWER program, which provides a 20% discount for low-income shoppers.

Our paper bags are made from 100% recycled paper and are fully compostable and recyclable. As such, we charge21¢ for each large paper grocery bag at the register to reflect the true manufacturing cost. We'll also be expanding the way we celebrate shoppers who use reusable grocery totes and include reusable produce bags, EcoToGo containers at the deli or salad bar, bulk containers (like mason jars, upcycled containers with lids, or cloth bags), and coffee mugs and thermoses. We recognize that not everyone has access to a reusable grocery tote. That's why we're starting a totally free library of grocery totes, recycled paper bags, and cardboard boxes that will be available for you to use at the Front End. Donations are welcome! Feel free to donate a tote bag to this library if you'd like to contribute and clean out your tote bag supply, and take one when you need it.

How much money did the Co-op donate to local organizations in 2023?

We're making these changes to encourage daily use of reusable bags, reusable produce bags, and reusable bulk containers in efforts to minimize the amount of single-use products entering the waste stream. We also know many community organizations rely on the Co-op for charitable funding opportunities, and we're dedicated to continue to offer ways for non-profit organizations to gain support.

Thank you for your participation in our Change for Good program. Questions? email us at marketingmanager@moscowfood.coop or call (208) 882-8537 ext. 222.

FEATURED RECIPIENTS: April - June 2024

Stop by the downtown store to support these local organizations.

Inland Oasis

Inland Oasis is a volunteer organization providing support to the LGBTQ+ Community and our Allies on the Palouse. We are here to provide support to our communities through educational, social, and health programming. These services include The West Side Food Pantry, a community center, an emergency fund for those in immediate need, and social activities like drag bingo and game nights.

The Change for Good Programming would help fund grocery staples that we do not receive via other means, and go toward renovating the kitchen space so we can provide one free meal a month to the local community.

PALOUSE LAND TRUST

Palouse Land Trust helps permanently conserve the very best of the Palouse and north-central Idaho: open spaces and iconic landscapes, rare ecosystems, working farms and forests, healthy wildlife and fish habitat, and special outdoor places that bring the community together.

We work with willing landowners to create voluntary conservation agreements that benefit the landowner and the entire region not just for today, but for generations to come.  Take a look around to learn more about how this great conservation work happens and how you can get involved in protecting the lands that sustain and inspire us all.

The Change for Good Programming would help support our educational and outreach goals to connect with more k-12 students in Latah County, as well as foster deeper relationships in communities where we have conserved lands. Specifically, funds will support the addition of a dedicated AmeriCorps team member who will lead the charge in educational and community programming at our preserves outside of Moscow, a public space in Troy, and a new wildlife preserve outside of Deary. The AmeriCorps position is critical to advancing our directive to connect more people to the natural world while building a community of support and championship for land conservation across our region. The Change for Good Program will directly support position funding for the work of the AmeriCorps member to deliver impactful, meaningful activities and opportunities for learning and connecting on our treasured landscape.
